The history of Copán Ruinas

Copán Ruinas was the capital city of a Classic Period Kingdom between the 5th and the 9th centuries. It was occupied for thousands of years and boasted a distinct architectural and sculptural style. The city undertook many historical events, including the demise of one of their greatest kings,  Uaxaclajuun Ub’aah K’awiil. This historic leader was captured and executed by the king of Quiriguá. This resulted in a 17 year hiatus at the city as well as a reversal of fortunes.
