The Geography and History of Islas de la Bahia

The islands were first discovered by Christopher Columbus on the 30th of July in 1502. Upon the islands’ discoveries, the explorers found that the islands were inhabited by an advanced population of Pech Indians. During the years that followed, the islands were attacked frequently and it was undertaken as a war against the Indians who were said to be savages, hostile cannibals and a society opposed to Christianity. During this time the Spanish Queen signed a decree allowing Indian slave trade.

In the years that followed, the islands had a number of Spanish, British and other European settlers who had made their way to the islands. This diverse amalgamation of cultures is still present in the islands today and plays a role in its multicultural culture.

The Bay Islands are made up of 8 islands off the coast of Honduras. This collection of islands includes Utila, Roatan and Guanaja as well as the smaller islands of St. Helena, Barbareta, Morat and the two Hog Islands.

These islands are located on the Bonacca Ridge which was created as a result of an enormous crack which runs along the ocean floor. When lava welled up through the crack, the Caribbean Plate was formed which then created the Bonacca Ridge after the plate buckled.
