The history of Sa Pa
Sa Pa has been the home to villages and tribes that history does not even know about. The only links we have to the unknown inhabitants are the petroglyphs of the valley which date back to the 15th century. The area then became the home to a number of minority groups including the Hmong, Dao, Giáy, Pho Lu and Tay people.
It was only once the French reached the mountainous region that Sa Pa was actually placed on a map. It was during this time that the region began seeing military presence. The French Military marched through the valleys until eventually the region came into French power.
In 1912 it was decided that the township would become a medical base for ill and injured officers, however more unrest struck the region at the end of the Second World War as attacks commenced until 1954. Most of the local residents fled to safer lands and the region was almost deserted.
Numerous projects have commenced since then to give the region a rebirth of sorts and it is now a tourist destination that is growing constantly.
Tourist attractions in and around Sa Pa
Sa Pa is undoubtedly a hiking and trekking hotspot; with gorgeous scenery, challenging peaks and delightful valleys, nature lovers will be enthused in Sa Pa. The Muong Hoa Valley, Rice Fields of Shin Chai and the Fansipan Mountain are amongst the favourite attractions in the region with a number of the smaller villages drawing in adventurous explorers all year round.
If you crave the sound of waterfalls thundering down into beautiful pools then the Thac Bac Waterfall and the Love Waterfall will offer you a picture-perfect moment.
