The city of Yangon was initially founded in the 6th century under the name Dagon. It remained under Mon rule as a fishing village until King Alaungpaya conquered it in 1755. After a period of British rule the city was handed back to the Burmese administration but was almost entirely destroyed by a fire in 1841.

In 1852, the British seized the city and all of lower Burma once again and kept it under their control until Burma gained independence in 1948.
