The history of Yangon

The city of Yangon was initially founded in the 6th century under the name Dagon. It remained under Mon rule as a fishing village until King Alaungpaya conquered it in 1755. After a period of British rule the city was handed back to the Burmese administration but was almost entirely destroyed by a fire in 1841.

In 1852, the British seized the city and all of lower Burma once again and kept it under their control until Burma gained independence in 1948. While the city became an incredible economic and political hub under the British Empire, it has grown even more in recent years. The boom in investment has given the city immense opportunity for growth, as well as the opportunity to boast their historic pride in style.
