The history of Kochi

Kochi was under the rule of the Kulasekhara dynasty between the 9th and the 12th century AD. While the city was considered successful during their reign, Kochi only really flourished once the European voyagers arrived. Formerly known as Cochin the city has a history that is imbedded with a number of vital role players. The arrival of the Portuguese brought about a period which was considered the most eventful and prosperous. What makes the partnership between the rulers of Cochin and the Portuguese King so unique is that this was no hostile takeover. Together the two forces formed a friendship treaty and grew the city into a profitable region equipped with factories and forts as well as a huge spice trading market.

The Portuguese experienced a decline in power during 1663 upon which time the Dutch came into power. Their reign was relatively short as in 1773 Hyder Ali of Mysore invaded the region until the English came into power. The city continued to develop as the major harbour of the country and eventually became the economic hub of Kerala after India achieved independence.
