The history of Jaipur

Jaipur was founded in 1727 and was named after the leader who ruled from 1699 and 1744. Maharaja Jai Singh II was the main founder of the city as well as its namesake and oversaw the construction of some of the city’s largest attractions and was also strongly linked to mathematics and science in the region. The city was ruled under the royal reign right up until India achieved independence. It then became the capital city of Rajasthan and is completely run by democratically elected local governments.

The city also got awarded the nickname of the Pink City after the Prince of Wales graced Jaipur with a visit. To commemorate the Prince’s visit King Sawai Ram Singh ordered all royal and official buildings to be painted a pink, sandstone colour.
