Seminyak

Seminyak is located north of Kuta, the tourist hotspot and party hub of Bali. However, it’s not as crowded as Kuta so it’s quieter. Here there are plenty of restaurants offering international and local cuisine for every budget, chic boutiques selling both local and international designs, trendy bars, and even a few clubs. You can also take a taxi to Kuta for more nightlife activities. The clubs in Bali have no cover charge!

At the Beach

Seminyak is the perfect place to spend a relaxing beach holiday. Here you can rent chairs, umbrellas, and surfboards. If you have never been surfing, just talk to one of the Balinese - they also give surfing lessons. Swimming can be a bit difficult here because of the high waves but surfing is the ideal way to get refreshed and enjoy the sea!

Occasionally you will come across beach vendors selling DVDs, sunglasses, popsicles, fruit, and other things. The pineapples here are particularly delicious and the vendors will artfully carve them for you so that you can enjoy the perfect tropical snack.

In the evening Balinese families come here to enjoy the sunset. The Balinese people are very social and will be happy to hear about your children and grandchildren.

Eating Out

In Seminyak you will find delicious and diverse cuisine. There are plenty of places where you can try traditional Balinese dishes but there are also quite a few places where you can get international cuisine including burgers, pizza, sandwiches, and more.

Tip: Just east of Sunset Road (towards Kerobokan) there is an excellent Balinese restaurant. Some of the most highly recommended dishes include Sate Ayam (traditional grilled chicken skewers with peanut sauce) and pasta primavera (pasta with cream sauce and vegetables)

You can sign up with a group for a meal of Balinese suckling pig meal, just ask the staff (usually for 10 people it works out to about $15 USD per person*). Although the restaurant is only located near a few hotels and guest houses the restaurant is very popular so you might have to wait for a table. The restaurant is about ten minutes away from the beach by scooter and if you get lost you can always stop and ask a local for directions.

If you go to the Jalan Arjuna a Kaki Lima beach promenade you should be able to find vendors selling Balinese deserts – small steamed dumplings filled with chocolate or jam. Usually vendors charge tourists a little bit more but do not worry about this, the difference is only about 10 cents.

Day Trips

If you need a break from the beach then we recommend treating yourself to a day at one of the many spas. An hour long Balinese massage costs the equivalent of about $10 USD*. For about $20 USD* you can get a spa package which includes a massage, facial, manicure, and pedicure.

If you are interested in cultural sights then you should definitely check out the fascinating sea temple of Tanah Lot. This temple was founded in the 15th century as protection against sea daemons. It is built on a rock which can only be reached at low tide. Only monks may enter the temple. There are niches throughout the structure where holy sea snakes nest. Along the path to this temple there are a number of small shops where you can buy souvenirs.

All excursions in Bali are very easy to organize as there are many drivers for hire who will gladly show you around – these guides offer tours for very reasonable prices (don’t forget to tip!).  If you would rather explore on your own then you can also rent a scooter. Traffic in Seminyak and Kuta can be a bit chaotic for westerners. There are often religious ceremonies and processions in the street. You are welcome to watch but you should ask before taking photos of these processions or the Balinese people in general.
