Jaguar Rescue Center

In the vibrant area of Puerto Viejo de Limòn, amongst the lush greenery and mystical forestry, lies the spirit of one of the America’s most enchanted animals - the jaguar. While this spectacular creature is considered the master of the jungle, it is also one of the most endangered species in Costa Rica. Fuelled by the spirit of change in the hopes of rescuing and caring for this remarkable endangered species as well as a variety of other animals, the Jaguar Rescue Centre offers animals a second chance at living in the wild, while offering you the opportunity to interact, learn and play a role in the preservation of the Costa Rican wildlife.

The story behind the Jaguar Rescue Center

In the midst of their own love story, Sandro and Encar Garcia fell in love with Costa Rica in 1993. After seeing the mistreatment of the Costa Rican wildlife first-hand, the couple decided to move to Costa Rica in 2004 in the hopes of helping animals of all sizes. In light of Sandro’s famed approach to the breeding of reptiles and amphibians; the couple started out with saving and rehabilitating reptiles, but soon expanded with the ever growing development of the country. In 2007 the couple found a jaguar cub which had recently been orphaned. Sandro and Encar did everything they could to save the cub’s life, but in the end this symbol of Costa Rican nature passed away. In memory of that brave little cub; the Jaguar Rescue Centre opened its doors in 2008.

Since that very first jaguar cub, the rescue centre has saved, rehabilitated and released back into protected wildlife reserves over four hundred animals.

Experience the joy of the Jaguar Rescue Center

Animal lovers and nature enthusiasts will find a piece of their soul at the Jaguar Rescue Centre. The centre offers private and guided tours of the wilderness, while offering visitors the opportunity to interact with a variety of species including howler monkeys, as well as a variety of other primate species and mammals. Direct contact with the animals is promoted, as Encar believes that affection, love and touch form the basis of a happy childhood in humans and in animals. These animals have all been through traumatic experiences and in order to gain the confidence they need to survive in the wild, it is essential that they all experience a great deal of TLC in their time at the centre.
